Prototyping

Well, as it stands right now we are entering the prototyping phase of our project.  I have to admit that it is kind of hard focusing on a basic prototype when I am always so tempted to solve problems very far in advance.

We are working on a game that has a lot of liquid physics in it, and a lot of the time spent so far has been deciding on which ones to use.  If worse came to worse, we could just write our own scripts, but that would be very time-consuming.

Fortunately, we have come across some free ones on the Unity assets store that seem like they will do a great job.  More specifically, the one we are most likely implementing is this one, by a guy named Rodrigo Fernandez Diaz.  The odd thing is that his code is all in 2D, which will no doubt be less expensive and more than likely look better than anything we could do in 3D in a reasonable amount of time, but the rest of our game is going to be in 3D.  It should be an interesting meshing of styles once we start to solidify that.

Once the game's prototype is ready, I will undoubtedly post and talk about it.  The idea for the game is basically a 2D platformer, with a character that can melt walls and re-shape the environment to give them advantages.  It remains to be seen where it will wind up beyond that point, but getting the basic mechanics going is our first objective.

We are hoping to have some simple cinematic scenes with a basic story structure to give the game more of an organic feel rather than just simple puzzles in an isolated environment.  Of course, a lot of this will depend on the dedication of all of our team members, so we have a long road ahead of us!
